• you run over a cane toad on the way home, and see its body on the road in your rear-view mirror. in the morning, the toad is sitting in your driveway. waiting.
• you’re sure you’ve gone past this particular canefield already, but you’re going straight down the bruce highway. you couldn’t have got turned around. you pass the same canefield again.
• you snag your shirt on a wait-a-while. as you pull it away, you find you have snagged your sock on a vine as well. you feel a vine touch the back of your neck.
• a cassowary approaches. you do not know where it came from. it stares at you as it draws nearer.
• the announcer at the mareeba rodeo addresses you directly. you do not know him. he does not know you. but he tells you about the day you die. the crowd goes silent. dust pours from your eyes and mouth.
• how long have you been in this cane field? how long have any of these people been in this cane field? who are these people? who are you?
• you are waiting for the cyclone to pass. you do not realise that the cyclone is waiting for you to do the same.
• the wet season arrives. the barron falls roar. you hear it at home. you hear it at work. it gets louder. water begins to drip from your clothes.
• the skyrail pauses in its ascent. the wind sounds like a song. the song is beautiful. you want to find the source of the song. you open the door.
• the carpark at the Macca’s at Woree is full of cars. more cars keep driving in. there is a tower of cars being built around the Macca’s. from somewhere inside you can hear screaming.
• you are inside the butterfly sanctuary in kuranda. so many butterflies are perched on you. one lands in your mouth. you taste something for which there is no name. when the butterflies leave, you are nowhere to be found.
• it is late at night. walsh’s pyramid begins to glow like a beacon. everyone steps out of their homes to watch. we knew this day would come.
